Lela May Moscardelli

Lela May Moscardelli, 67, of Taylorville passed away at 9:20 a.m. on Tuesday, November 21, 2017 in her home surrounded by her family. She was born on July 28, 1950 in Springfield, the daughter of Louis and Nancy (Borough) Francis. She married Herbert Moscardelli on May 3, 2006 in Taylorville. Lela was an avid Bingo player and enjoyed taking trips to the Par-A-Dice casino. She enjoyed camping and was devoted to her loving family.

She is survived by her husband: Herb Moscardelli of Taylorville; children: Jerry Woodson of Bulpitt, Tammy Standage (Mike) of Taylorville, David Woodson of Springfield, and Jenny Woodson of Taylorville; numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews; and brother: David Lee Francis of Taylorville. She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter: Billie Lee Boyce, and brother: Steven Francis.

In keeping with her wishes, Lela will be cremated, and the family will host a gathering at a later date. Memorials in Lela’s honor may be made to the family. Betty L. Craft

Betty L. Craft, 67, of Moweaqua, died November 21, 2017 in her home.

 

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, November 27, 2017 at Seitz Funeral Home, Moweaqua, IL. Visitation will be from 5 – 7 p.m. Sunday, November 26, 2017, also at the funeral home. Burial will be in Wright Cemetery, Findlay, IL. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, Moweaqua, IL.

 

Betty was born April 19, 1950 in Decatur, IL, the daughter of Ralph E. and Margaret W. (Wise) Denton. She married Larry Delmar Craft June 6, 1970 in Findlay, IL. He survives.

 

Surviving are her husband, Larry Delmar; son, Delbert D. Craft of Moweaqua, IL; daughter, Sherry (Jason) Woodhead of Huntsville, AL; grandsons: Cole Woodhead of West Monroe, LA and Cade Woodhead of Beaufort, SC; brothers: John (Reva) Denton and Larry (Kerry) Denton all of Moweaqua; sister, Linda Houchins of Moweaqua; and sister-in-law, Sharon Denton, also of Moweaqua.

 

Preceding her in death are her parents, brothers: Fred Denton and Gene Denton; and sister, Peggy Whitehurst.

Linda S. Saulsbery

Linda S. Saulsbery, 75 of Mt. Auburn passed away on Friday, November 24, 2017 at 3:55 p.m. at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield. She was born on March 22, 1942 in Louisville, KY the Daughter of Perry and Mary (Choquet) Gilpin. She married Larry Saulsbery on February 22, 1964 in Hillsboro, IL and he preceded her in death on May 11, 2016. Linda was an excellent mother and an even better grandmother. She delighted in the exploits of her grandchildren. She loved living on her little farm, riding her four-wheeler, hunting mushrooms, and occasionally going to the river boat for lunch and slots with Dale, Vickie and Norma. Sadly, losing her husband and the failure of the Cardinals in the last year slowed her down some, but she always had a smile for the grandkids and was quick to make a new friend at a basketball game. She was much loved and will be forever missed.

Surviving are her Son: Jeffery (Jackie) Saulsbery of Clinton, IL; Daughter: Diana (Richard) Musgrave of Strawberry Plains, TN and Debra (Elmer) Dunaway of Owaneco, IL; Grandchildren: Ashley (Josh) Hays, Aaron (Cortney) Sinnard, Holly Sinnard, William Cox, Benjamin Cox, Branden Cox, Danielle Cox, Mary Saulsbery and Alyssa Saulsbery; Great-Grandchildren: Robert Cox Montgomery, Kayleigh Cox Montgomery, Zaquaria Cox, Brayden Hays and Peyton Hays; Brother-in-Law: Jerry (Jean) Saulsbery; Several Nieces, Nephews and Cousins. She was preceded in death by her Parents, Husband, Sister: Sandy Scott, Brothers: David, Donnie and Dickey Gilpin.

It was Linda’s Wishes to be cremated. There will be a celebration of life and an inurnment at a later date.

Susa Jane McWard

Susa Jane McWard, 93, of Palmer, passed away at 11:10 p.m. on Saturday, November 25, 2017 at Taylorville Care Center in Taylorville, IL.

 

Susa Jane was born December 15, 1923 at home, in rural Taylorville, the daughter of Harry C. and Julia N. (Micenheimer) Hudson. She married Raymond McWard on August 19, 1949 at the First Presbyterian Church of Morrisonville in Morrisonville, IL. He preceded her in death on April 7, 1986.

 

Susa Jane graduated from Taylorville High School, and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in home economics from Eastern Illinois University. She taught home economics in the Hammond and Blue Mound schools for a few years, before becoming a full-time home maker. Susa Jane devoted her life to her family’s needs. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Morrisonville, a past member of the Order of the Eastern Star and Ladies Auxiliary of Palmer, and was instrumental in bringing city water to the town of Palmer. Susa Jane enjoyed sewing, and was an excellent cook. Her greatest joy in life was raising her children, and spending time with her grandchildren.

 

She was also preceded in death by her parents.

 

Susa Jane is survived by her daughter, Rebecca (husband, Bill) Arkebauer of Palmer, IL; her sons, Harry J. McWard of Palmer, IL, Monroe (wife, Laurie) McWard of Rochester, IL, and Jeff McWard of Taylorville; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; her sister, Julia Lee (husband, Wendell) Nash of Peoria, IL; and several nieces and nephews.

 

Visitation: The family will receive friends from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, November 28, 2017 at Shafer-Perfetti & Assalley Funeral Home, 202 W. Franklin St., Taylorville, IL 62568.

 

Funeral Ceremony: 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, November 29, 2017 at Shafer-Perfetti & Assalley Funeral Home in Taylorville, with Rev. Jim Ferrill as officiant.

 

Interment will follow at Morrisonville Cemetery in Morrisonville, IL.

Helen Irene Martin

Helen Irene Martin, 99 years, five months and 19 days, of Taylorville, died at 5:46 p.m. Friday, November 24, 2017 at Taylorville Care Center.

 

Helen was born on June 5, 1918 in Taylorville, Illinois, the daughter of Lester and Marie P. (Poor) Pearson. She married Wilbur H. Martin, and he preceded her in death in 1937. She later married Levi A. Martin, and he preceded her in death in 1978. Mrs. Martin worked for the State of Illinois Drivers License Facility, retiring after 39 years and one month. She was a member of the 1st Baptist Church in Taylorville.

 

Helen is survived by her daughter: Sandra Stine of Oklahoma City, OK; six grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Edna Pearson of Taylorville.

 

Along with her two husbands, Mrs. Martin was preceded in death by her brother: Paul Pearson; daughters: Judi Sauter, Pamela Elston, Gloria CaPaul, Mary L. Martin; and one grandson: Eddie D. Stine.

Charles R. Hohenstein

Charles R. Hohenstein of South Bend, Indiana passed away November 30, 2017 in South Bend. He was born July 20, 1955 in Taylorville, IL the son of Ronald E. Hohenstein and Dorothy F. Hohenstein. Charles graduated from Mt. Auburn High School with the class of 1973, and held degrees from Illinois Wesleyan, Chicago Theological Seminary and a PhD from the University of Notre Dame having taught humanities at Notre Dame.

 

Surviving are his brother Kenneth Hohenstein and his wife Helen of Mt. Auburn and sisters: Phyllis Dorn and husband Larry of Ankeny, Iowa and Susan Rush and husband Stan of North Richland Hills, Texas and several nieces and nephews. Charles was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Ron Hohenstein and Jim Hohenstein.

 

Burial will be held in the Mt. Auburn Cemetery at a later date.

Floyd Boyd

Floyd Boyd, 67, of Nokomis passed away at 8:16 a.m. on Saturday, December 2, 2017 in his home. He was born in Newton County, Texas, the son of Horace and Ruby (Rosenbaum) Boyd. He married Dorothy Gabriel on June 28, 2010 in Taylorville. Floyd excelled in his career as a boilermaker. Following his retirement, he enjoyed fishing, hunting, and the great outdoors and was an avid fan of the Dallas Cowboys. He especially cherished the time spent with his granddaughter AJ.

He is survived by his wife: Dorothy “Dot” Boyd; son: Richie (Tracie) Boyd; daughter: Kim (Mark) Middleton; stepson: George (Kendra) Spallinger II; 9 grandchildren; brothers: Tom (Cynthia) Boyd, Carl Reed (Sandy) Boyd, and John Boyd; sisters: Lorraine (Melvin) Green, Florence Heard, Dorothy Ann (Tom) Link, Rosalie (Benton) Hamilton, and Joyce (John) Nichols; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers: Nathan Boyd, Edward Boyd, and Henry Boyd.

Floyd will be cremated, and the family will host a celebration of his life in the spring. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association. Edith Mae Rever, 77, of Assumption, died December 3, 2017 in Prairie Rose Health Care Center, Pana, IL.

 

Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, December 7, 2017 in St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Assumption, IL. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m., Wednesday, December 6, 2017 in Seitz Funeral Home, Assumption, IL. A prayer service will follow at 7 p.m. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Assumption, IL. Memorials may be made to St. Mary’s Catholic Church or Alzheimer’s Association.

 

Edith was born January 29, 1940 in Brownstown, IL, the daughter of Cloyce and Ruth (Baughman) Gatewood. She married James Walters, he preceded her in death. She later married Thomas E. Rever February 14, 1992 in Assumption, IL. He preceded her in death February 9, 2015.

 

Edith was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and St. Mary’s Altar Society. She was retired as a cook from Kemmerer Village.

 

Surviving are her daughters: Monica (Dennis) Christian of Tower Hill, IL, Marla (Shawn) Stover of Arizona, Susan Brown of Tennessee, and Gina Walters of Humboldt, IL; seven grandchildren: two great-grandchildren; brother, Kenneth (Dorothy) Gatewood of Kentucky and cousin, Kay Estes of Pana, IL.

 

Preceding her in death are her husbands, parents, one brother and one sister.

She then married Charlie Jump on September 12, 1986 in Taylorville.

Martha worked for the Taylorville School District and was a member of the Taylorville Christian Church.

Jean S. Boch

Jean S. Boch (aka Mama Jean), 88, of Taylorville, passed away peacefully at her home on Friday, Dec. 1, 2017.

Jean was born May 25th 1929 in Moweaqua, IL. She was a long time resident of Taylorville, IL. She worked for many years as a care giver for Hands Across Illinois, retiring in 2002. Other places of employment include: Malloy’s, Midway Tavern, and T&C Lounge. Jean was also the lead vocalist for the Edinburg Opera House Band, as well as, Jeanie and the Boys (band). In addition, she was a Senior Regent of the Taylorville Moose Lodge Post 1516.


Jean was devoted to her family and loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great great grandchildren. She had a tremendous love for music. Jean was a talented vocalist and pianist. She also enjoyed reading, crafting, puzzle solving, cooking, bingo, and playing Yahtzee and poker with her friends and family.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents: Naomi and Robert McQuality; her son: James G. Tirpak; her niece: Linda Allen; two sisters and four brothers; three great grandchildren; and son-in-law: Terry Ostermeier.

She is survived by her children: Andrea (Dale) Smith of Riverton, IL., Michael (Linda) Tirpak of Cerro Gordo, IL., Steven (Diane) Tirpak of Leroy, IL., Shirley Ostermeier of Taylorville, IL., SuAnn (Arnold) Tullis of Virginia, IL., Richard (Michel) Thompson of Daytona, FL., 20 grandchildren, 45 great grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren, and many loving nieces and nephews.

All whom loved her dearly will never forget her tenacity, wit, charm, humorous personality, and beautiful voice.

There will be a public visitation held on Monday, Dec. 11, 2017 from 4 - 7 p.m. at McClure Funeral Home, 302 W. Poplar St. Taylorville, IL. As Jean would say, “The more the merrier.” In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Boch Family, c/o McClure Funeral Home. James William Lawyer

James William Lawyer, 75 of Taylorville entered the gates of heaven on Wednesday, December 6, 2017 at 1:00 a.m. at Heritage Health Care Center in Springfield. He was born on April 6, 1942 in the old St. Vincent Hospital in Taylorville, IL the Son of Bill and Ruby (Irwin) Lawyer. He married Janet Shuck on April 16, 1961 in the Mt. Pleasant Church of God in Assumption, IL. In his younger days he worked for Bulpit’s furniture, circle steel and the Taylorville Golf Course. He retired from the C & IM railroad in Springfield after 42 years of service.

 

Jim enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, car races, the St. Louis Cardinals, and he had a love for football. He played football in his high school years and then went on to volunteer his time coaching the original JFL Bears team. He taught his grandchildren and Great-Grandchildren the skill of football. Jim was also their biggest fan on and off the field. Jim loved his great-Grandchildren, grandchildren and children but his biggest love was for his sweetie Janet. He loved with all his heart. He was a member of the Hopewell Baptist Church in Pana. In his earlier walk with Jesus Jim taught a bible study in his home and at work. He loved to tell the others about Jesusand share how God changed his life.

William E. Stuart, 65 of Mt. Auburn passed away on Monday, December 11, 2017 at 8:24 a.m. at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield. He was born on September 3, 1952 in Taylorville, IL the Son of Junior Elwood and Julia Ellen (Hobbs) Stuart. He married Shirley Milburn on February 1, 1986 in Niantic, IL. William “Prairie Dog” worked at Caterpillar retiring as a Crane Operator. He was a member of the NRA, Ducks Unlimited, Varmint Hunter, National Wild Turkey Federation, Coyote Slayer, Kedron Lodge #340 AF & AM in Mt. Auburn, IL, Ansar Shrine, Warrensburg Sportsman’s Club, 1000 and 1500 yard club, Classic Car Enthusiast and the FS Coffee Club.

Surviving are his Wife: Shirley Stuart of Mt. Auburn, IL; Son: Brent Milburn of Mt. Auburn; Daughter: Tracy (Jason) Elam of Mt. Robert D Hancock, Sr.

Robert D. Hancock, Sr., 76, of Taylorville, IL, passed away at 1:59 p.m. on Monday, December 11, 2017 at his residence.

 

Bob was born September 15, 1941 in Morrisonville, IL, the son of Loy Pope and Ida Maude (Plopper) Hancock.

 

Bob attended Morrisonville High School, and went on to manage the Shell Service Station in Morrisonville, and later own the Mobil Service Station in Morrisonville. He would also retire from Spartech Plastics in Taylorville after twenty-five years of service. Bob was an avid outdoorsman, who loved fishing, hunting, and mushroom hunting. He greatly enjoyed history, especially Civil War history, watching westerns, and collecting owls and Elvis memorabilia.

She was born on July 3, 1938 in Taylorville, IL the Daughter of Lawrence Davis and Frances Fesser. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Taylorville and she worked as an RN at Taylorville Memorial Hospital and Taylorville Home Health Services.

Surviving are her Sons: Rick Ward of St. Paul, MN; Jay (Rhonda) Ward of Hillsboro, IL; Daughter: Kami (Bryan) Payne of Taylorville, IL; Grandchildren: Megan (Wes) Diefendorf of Macon, IL; Arika Ward of St. Louis, MO; Keegan Ward of Taylorville, IL; Shane Lucas of Taylorville, IL; Tristan Payne of Charleston, IL; Tyler (Katie) Payne of Sherman, IL; Great-Grandchildren: Anna Ward of Macon, IL; Addison Czerwonka of Macon, IL; Audrey Diefendorf of Macon, IL; Carter Shick of Charleston, IL; Ava and Emma Payne of Sherman, IL; Lilah Payne of Sherman, IL; Brother: Lawrence (Velma) Davis Jr. of Jeisyville, IL; Brother-in-Law: Bob Woods of Rockford, IL; Several Nieces, Nephews and Cousins. JoAnn Christian Lacey was born in Taylorville, Illinois on March 13, 1935 to June Hallie Pounds Christian and John Henry Christian. She graduated High School from the last class to graduate from the Palme, Illinois High School in 1953. Thereafter she attended Brown’s Business College. She used her education to begin working in Decatur, Illinois. It was in Decatur that she found and married the love of her life, Francis Neil Lacey. They were married after a whirlwind romance on February 18, 1957 in Hernando, Mississippi. They enjoyed a magnificent 61 years of marriage.

They purchased their service station in Palmer, Illinois shortly after their marriage which they owned and operated for well over 40 years. During these 40 plus years she continued her education by graduating from the School of Cosmetology in Springfield, Illinois and drove a school bus for the Morrisonville School District for 22 years. JoAnn and Francis had retired and made their home in Livingston, TN for the last few years.

JoAnn and Francis raised 3 children that all graduated from college due to their parent’s support. Their oldest child, Cynthia Kay South lives with her husband Gary Lee South in Jonesville, South Carolina. Cindy’s two children Jason and Dustin Tull also live in South Carolina. Jason and wife Dawn have two children, Danielle and Leonna. Dustin and his wife Lacey have two children Hailin and Caden. Their second child, Brian Scott Lacey and his wife live in Fort Collins, Colorado where Brian has worked for Country Financial since 1991 and his wife Jodi works as an executive secretary for the District Attorney. Their 3 children Chance and Addison are continuing their education currently. Brianna is a nurse at Anschutz hospital in Aurora, CO. The youngest, Bradley Neil Lacey lives with his wife Sheila in Livingston, Tennessee after Brad retired from the Illinois State Police as a commander in District 13 & 22 for over 26 years.

JoAnn was preceded in death by her mother and father as well as two brothers, John Laverne Christian and Jerry Richard Christian. She is survived by her husband, Francis Lacey. Her surviving siblings are Judy Lairson of Palmer, Jane Voss of Raymond and Jack Christian of Morrisonville.

Visitation will be held on Friday, December 15, 2017 from 4:00 –8:00 p.m. at Sutton Memorial Home in Taylorville. The funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 16, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at Sutton Memorial Home in Taylorville, IL with Pastor Chad Foster officiating. Burial will be held in Anderson Cemetery in Palmer, IL.

Wayne R. Mahan, 89 of Taylorville passed away surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday, December 13, 2017 at 7:25 a.m. at Heritage Health Care Center in Pana, IL. He was born on December 15, 1927 in Herrick, IL the Son of Otis D. and Cleo I. (Durbin) Mahan. He married Dolores H. Turvey on November 19, 1950 in Taylorville, IL. He worked as a Postal Clerk and was a member of the VFW Post #4495 Taylorville and the American Postal Workers Union. Wayne was a veteran of the United States Army serving in the 11th Airborne. Wayne was an avid bowler and golfer and loved being outdoors and spending time with his family.

Surviving are his Sons: Gregory (Barbara) Mahan of Taylorville, William (Karen) Mahan of Taylorville, David Mahan and companion Gloria Sheedy of Taylorville, Evan (Donna) Mahan of Taylorville; Daughters: Maureen Curry of Taylorville, Myra Moffitt and fiance Jeff Boaden of Edinburg, Michelle (Clete) Edwards of Taylorville; Grandchildren: Clint (Kristin) Mahan of St. Louis, MO, Ryan (Eva) Mahan of Springfield, IL, Luke (Laura) Mahan of Libertyville, IL, Kedra (Aaron) Schuster of Highland, IL, Daniel Mahan of Nashville, TN, Kelly (Aaron) Johnston of Nokomis, IL, Lauren Mahan of Taylorville, IL, Jordan (Alex) Siempelkamp of Taylorville, Karri Orrison of Shelbyville, IL, Andrew Mahan of Kincaid, IL, Adam Mahan of Pawnee, IL, Erica and Emily Edwards of Taylorville, IL, Trent Boaden of Litchfield, IL; Great-Grandchildren: Nolan, Noah, Owen, April, Ellie, Reese, Tage, Leni, Layne, McKynlee, Mia, Madalyn, Annee Jo; Brother: Leon (Hope) Mahan of Chatham, IL; Several Nieces, Nephews and Cousins. Funeral service will be held on Monday, December 18, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Sutton Memorial Home in Taylorville with Pastor Jim Wolfe officiating. Burial will be held in Fraley Cemetery in Taylorville, IL with military honors.

David Lavern Ackerman, 84 of Edinburg, IL passed away on Thursday, December 14, 2017 at 7:30 a.m. at Taylorville Memorial Hospital. He was born on January 4, 1933 in Cuba, MO the son of Walter and Elva (Cary) Ackerman. He married Gayla May Harter on April 30, 1955 in Taylorville, IL, they were later divorced. David served in the United States Army during the Korean war. He was a member of Edinburg First United Methodist Church.

Surviving are his sons: Leroy (Linda) Ackerman of Taylorville, IL, Bill Ackerman of Collinsville, OK, and Danny Ackerman of Taylorville, IL; daughter: Sharon Casteel (Judy Erley) of Springfield, IL; twelve grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two brothers; two sisters; and Several Nieces, Nephews, Cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, son: Edward Ackerman; and brother: Jim Ackerman.

It was David’s wishes to donate his body to science, there will be no services and an inurnment will be held at a later date.

Jon F. Johnson, 50 of Taylorville passed away on Friday, December 15, 2017 at 10:28 a.m. at his residence in Taylorville. He was born on August 2, 1967 in Springfield, IL the Son of Jimmie and Andrea (Guidotti) Johnson. Jon worked as a parts man at Bob Ridings in Taylorville for several years.
 
Surviving are his father and step-mother Jimmie (Pam) Johnson of Taylorville, IL; Step-Brother: Kirk (Jocelyn) Kerney of Carbondale, IL; Step- Sisters: Kerry (Joe) Curvey of Taylorville, IL; Kimberly (Jim) Blakley of Taylorville, IL; Several Nieces, Nephews and Cousins. He was preceded in death by his Mother. 
 
It was Jon’s wishes to be cremated and have no services, Inurnment: will be held at a later date.
